What is Lupus?

Lupus is a chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disease that affects collagen. This substance is a protein that binds our connective tissues and holds our body together, being present in the skin, bones and ligaments, tendons and cartilage, adipose and hematopoietic tissue, and organs.

When the immune system attacks collagen, the tissue loses elasticity, eliminating or reducing the functionality of the affected organs.

Lupus causes inflammation, pain, and damage to the affected parts of the body.

Causes of Lupus

As with other autoimmune diseases, we cannot describe a single cause that triggers the disease.

Genetic predisposition is a determining factor in many cases, but there are factors that trigger the disease.

Hormonal factors. Women suffer from Lupus more than men, accounting for 90 percent of people with this disease. This could be related to the high production of estrogen by women, especially before menstruation or during pregnancy.
Genetic factors. Although the genetic types associated with Lupus have not been determined, there are a high number of cases with a family history of Lupus or other autoimmune diseases.
Environmental factors. There are environmental factors that can trigger the disease, especially in those with a genetic predisposition. At Biosalud Day Hospital, we take these factors into account to act on them in the treatment.

What are the symptoms of lupus?

Common symptoms include:

Joint pain and stiffness, with or without inflammation
Muscle aches, pains, or weakness
Fever of unknown origin
Extreme fatigue
Butterfly-shaped rash over the nose and cheeks and other skin rashes
Unusual weight loss or gain
Anemia (very low red blood cell count)
Difficulty thinking, memory problems, confusion
Kidney problems of unknown origin
Chest pain when taking a deep breath
Sensitivity to sunlight
Hair loss
Purple or pale fingers
