Autoimmune Hepatitis

We are a European reference center for the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune diseases.

What is Autoimmune Hepatitis?

Autoimmune hepatitis is a disease that occurs when the patient's own immune system attacks the liver, causing inflammation and the death of cells in that tissue. It is a chronic and progressive disease that presents with periods of greater or lesser activity and is one of the most persistent autoimmune diseases.
The progression of the disease is serious, as it follows a chronic course with more or less severe flare-ups that, if maintained, generate fibrosis in the liver and, as a consequence, cirrhosis and liver failure.

Causes of Autoimmune Hepatitis

Genetic and environmental factors, as in other autoimmune diseases, combine to give rise to the disease. However, this alone does not explain why the immune system is altered, attacking the body itself, in this case, the liver.

Although the cause is unknown, there is a widespread hypothesis that explains that an environmental factor triggers a reaction of events modulated by cytotoxic T lymphocytes that target liver antigens. If there is a genetic predisposition on the part of the patient, a process of necroinflammation and liver fibrosis is generated.
Among the triggering agents, these can be infectious, toxic, pharmacological, and even certain herbal products.

Symptoms of Autoimmune Hepatitis

The disease is detected because fever and jaundice appear, as well as symptoms of liver dysfunction such as yellow skin pigmentation, pain in the upper right part of the abdomen, nausea and vomiting, and abdominal swelling.

The symptoms of this disease are similar to those of other types of hepatitis. The inflammation it causes in the liver due to the aggression of the patient's defensive cells causes fatigue due to inflammation, an increase in transaminases at the biochemical level, heavy digestions, digestive discomfort related to the intake of certain foods, especially fats, and significant exhaustion that prevents a normal life.

Treatment of Autoimmune Hepatitis

As specialists in biological medicine, we have several techniques that allow us to regulate the body, and we frequently use immunogenetic biomedicine and molecular hyperthermia.

The treatments at Biosalud aim to modify the internal environment, and nutritional measures are very important, such as the intake of vitamin C, deacidification, and regulation of the immune system, which will allow us to stop the process.

In addition, it must be taken into account that the liver is the organ that has the greatest capacity by itself to self-regenerate.
