What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, degenerative neurological disease. It affects the central nervous system, brain, and spinal cord.

It occurs when immune system cells, lymphocytes, attack the myelin of the nerves, causing it to disappear, and as a result, the nerves lose their functionality.

Causes of Multiple Sclerosis

As an autoimmune disease, its cause is found in a combination of genetic and environmental factors, although it has not been determined why it affects some people and not others.

However, there are risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing the disease:

  • Women between 16 and 55 years old. This is the profile of a person with sclerosis; women are two to three times more likely to develop recurrent multiple sclerosis.
  • Family history. Increases the risk if parents or siblings have had the disease.
  • Viral infections
  • Lack of vitamin D
  • Smoking

Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis

The fundamental characteristic of this disease is that it can affect any area of the central nervous system and cause different symptoms, conditioning the impact and transformation of each person.

These symptoms can appear and disappear, manifest in different combinations, and range from mild to moderate or severe.

Symptoms can manifest in various ways:

  • Muscular: such as lack of balance and coordination, numbness or muscle spasms, difficulty walking or moving arms and legs.
  • Intestinal: such as alterations in the urinary system or constipation.
  • Ocular: such as double vision or vision loss.
  • Neurological: such as memory loss and depression.
  • Sexual: erectile dysfunction.
  • Oral: such as speech that is difficult to understand or problems chewing. Fatigue is also a very common symptom of multiple sclerosis.
