What is ozone therapy?

Ozone as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, revitalizing, and regenerative agent

Ozone is a natural gas found in the atmosphere. However, the ozone we are referring to is medical ozone, which is not pure ozone but mixed with oxygen. Ozone therapy, the use of ozone for healing purposes, must be administered using high-precision equipment and a medical oxygen cylinder.

The initial treatment that doctors recommend for many musculoskeletal disorders characterized by pain, such as knee osteoarthritis, is anti-inflammatory drugs. Since these are chronic diseases, prolonged use of these anti-inflammatory drugs should be avoided. That is why ozone therapy is a very effective solution for treating inflammation and pain without the need for surgery or regular medication. This is because ozone is a powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic.

Ozone therapy in broad terms is any form of ozone administration into the body for therapeutic purposes. One of its most frequent applications is in cases of knee and hip osteoarthritis. It involves the intra-articular administration of ozone (a gas consisting of three oxygen atoms) directly into the area to be treated. It reduces symptoms in the short and medium term by continuously reducing pain, preserving mobility, and reducing functional disability. Applied once a week, the use of ozone for pain treatment achieves results from the initial stages.

People with hypertension or diabetes can also be treated with ozone therapy without altering their blood pressure or glucose levels. In young people who regularly play sports and have injuries to the musculoskeletal system or joints, ozone is applied to reduce pain and improve movement. Treatment in these cases consists of the combined application of ozone and platelet-derived growth factors, which achieves surprising results.

Medical studies confirm that intra-articular ozone is effective in relieving secondary chronic pain.

At Biosalud, we have been using ozone in rheumatology and musculoskeletal disorders for quite some time now.

Ozone is also a revitalizinggas. In fact, ozone is a revitalizer par excellence and an energizer. It also helps us fight free radicals and is therefore used as an anti-aging medicine technique.

When ozone is administered in low concentrations, the body's own resistance is mobilized, that is, the ozone layer (re)activates the immune system.

In response to this activation through the ozone layer, the body's immune cells produce special messengers called cytokines (including important mediators such as interferons). These inform other cells in the immune system, triggering a cascade of positive changes throughout the immune system, which is stimulated to resist disease, for example. This means that the application of medical ozone is extremely useful for immune activation in patients with a low immune status and/or immune deficiency.

Consequently, small amounts of ozone applied in what is called Major Autohemotherapy (external treatment of the patient's blood before reinfusion) activate the body's own antioxidants.

Mariano Bueno explains it very well in this video about Grand Autohemotherapy.

Regenerative effect of ozone

Ozone kills viruses, germs, bacteria, and mold. Ozone binds with existing unsaturated fatty acids and forms biologically active ozonides that have an oxidizing effect on the cell layer of bacteria. Healthy cells are not damaged; on the contrary, they receive excellent energy nutrition. Ozone is a kind of super oxide that not only has sterilizing effects, but also initiates metabolism and blood supply.

Some general practitioners already use these methods when treating serious wound healing defects. Ozone is a good alternative medicine to antibiotics. Since antibiotics are currently prescribed even when there is only a slight trace of bacterial infection, the body gradually becomes resistant to the drugs. No resistance to ozone therapy has been found so far.
