May 17 marked International Lyme Disease Awareness Day, and to mark the occasion, we believe this is the ideal time to detail the symptoms of the disease, the stages of the condition, and how to prevent its effects.
During the month of May, Biosalud Day Hospital's social media accounts shared various messages related to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of this disease, known as "the great imitator," to raise awareness among everyone in the joint fight against it.
Lyme disease is an infection transmitted through tick bites. If a tick carries the Borrelia spirochete, its bite can cause migratory erythema, which weeks later can lead to neurological, cardiac, or joint problems. The diagnosis can be clinical or through a serological test.
Stages of Lyme disease
There are three stages of Lyme disease: an early stage, a spreading stage, and a late stage.
- The early stage is represented in three out of four patients by erythema: a reddish macule in the area of the bite, which appears between 2 and 30 days later. Sometimes this papule can measure up to 50 centimeters in diameter and, in many cases, it has the shape of two concentric circles.
- Dissemination: In this second phase, the bacteria spread throughout the body, and some Lyme disease patients develop flu-like musculoskeletal symptoms, including fatigue, fever, muscle pain, sore throat, back pain, and vomiting.
- Finally, in the late stage, which develops even years later, arthritis often appears. Joint inflammation is combined with Baker's cysts and skin lesions. Sleep and memory abnormalities also occur.
Treatment for late-stage Lyme disease
Treatment for chronic Lyme disease also consists of phases: a therapeutic preparation phase, intensive treatment, home treatment, and an evaluation of the progress made.
- During the preparatory phase, the body is prepared for the specific treatment by replenishing nutrient deficiencies, eliminating toxins with INUSphereris®, rebalancing the pH, and strengthening the intestinal flora.
- Intensive treatment involves the use of antibiotics, but with side effects minimized as much as possible, and innovative techniques such as ozone therapy or colon hydrotherapy are applied.
- During the home treatment phase, immune system stimulants are used, neurotoxins are drained, and natural anti-infectives are used to improve the effectiveness of antibiotics and minimize pain.
- Finally, the response is evaluated two months after shock therapy. Once this clinical evaluation has been performed, decisions are made based on this information.
Support Against Lyme Disease
The SosLyme Foundation is a non-profit foundation that supports patients from the city of Zaragoza.
It is one of the few Lyme disease patient associations in Spain, as this disease has become increasingly prevalent in recent years with the proliferation of tick colonies around cities, especially in humid areas and during the spring.
This foundation provides tremendous support to both Lyme disease patients and their families, helping them feel supported on the long road to overcoming this illness.
Furthermore, Biosalud Day Hospital is accredited by ILADS29, demonstrating our extensive experience in treating Lyme disease, applying tailored treatment, and reducing the adverse effects of the condition.
Our experience in this field helps patients not only with accurate and effective treatment, but also by making them feel supported throughout the process.
