Numerous studies have shown that experiencing trauma increases the risk of suffering from aftereffects even years after the event.
Research conducted by the Neuropsychiatric Epidemiology Unit at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, claims that middle-aged women who suffer from high levels of stress are more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease in old age.
Scientists led by Dr. Lena Johansson followed 800 Swedish women born between 1914 and 1930 for a period of approximately 40 years.
The participants underwent various neuropsychiatric examinations and tests at different stages of their lives, and any current symptoms of psychiatric disorders were assessed.
According to the data obtained in the study, 19% of the participants had developed dementia (including 104 women with Alzheimer's), and 25% of the women acknowledged that they still experienced some of the stressors in their lives, while 16% of the women admitted to having more than four. The most common problem cited by all the women was having a close relative who suffered from a psychiatric disorder.
