Calcium and vitamin D supplementation for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis

Calcium

It is recommended that the persons suffering from rheumatoid arthritis receive calcium and vitamin D supplements in addition to therapy for their management, and try a supervised physical activity programme, an balanced diet and smoking cessation.

Calcium and vitamin D supplementation for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis

Mario Salazar Páramo, Head of the Health Research Division at the Mexican Social Security Institute, confirms that the calcium and vitamin D administration to strengthen the absorption of various minerals should be incorporated as an important part of the treatment of people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

He further stated that patients with rheumatoid arthritis must receive lifelong treatment with glucocorticoids, which, among their side effects, cause decalcification and this in turn increases the likelihood that these patients will fracture more easily.

The research was conducted on 520 people diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (of whom 88 % are women), and found that continuous intake of glucocorticoids, while very effective in controlling the rheumatic disease, causes calcium absorption to be reduced and also makes bones brittle.

Once diagnosed and treated, patients soon, within six months to a year, begin to suffer from symptoms of osteopenia. The situation worsens if they also have a sedentary lifestyle or are smokers, said Salazar Paramo.

Therefore, he recommends that patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis receive calcium and vitamin D supplements in addition to therapy for its control, and try a supervised programme of physical activity, a balanced diet and avoid situations that invite smoking.

  3. I was born with rheumatoid arthritis. i am now taking cortisone 5 mg. i am 42 years old and my diet is high in fruits and vegetables. but i have chronic exhaustion. i hardly expose myself to the sun (hyperpigmentation problem).
My question is whether I should be concerned about whether I consume enough calcium and vitamin D. If I don't reach the recommended level, should I take a calcium and vitamin D supplement that does not contain heavy metals?
