No side effects, helping the body to create its own hormones

We age, in part, because our hormones decline.. Hormones are the body's communication systems that regulate cellular functions and gene expression. When hormones decline or synthetic hormones are introduced into the body, problems arise. Replenishing a youthful balance with natural hormones can restore vitality and delay many age-related health problems.

Levels of many hormones decline with age. Some of the oldest and still most popular antiaging treatments  are based on the idea that hormonal changes contribute to aging and reversing age-related hormonal changes will be beneficial.

The most famous of these treatments involves injections of human growth hormone (hGH). Growth hormone has a long history as an anti-ageing treatment and some evidence suggests that hGH has beneficial effects in older people: hGH supplements can increase muscle mass, strengthen the immune system and increase libido. There are studies in elderly patients in which they report feeling younger after treatment with hGH. Although hGH was hailed as a breakthrough, like many other anti-aging products it failed to live up to expectations, in part due to its negative side effects. These could include weight gain, high blood pressure and diabetes. Because, as the name suggests, hGH stimulates growth, but there is also the question of whether hGH could stimulate cancer growth and contribute to the development of cancer in patients with existing malignant or pre-malignant tumours.

The insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is another hormone that may play a role in ageing and can be purchased as a supplement. IGF-1 production is induced by growth hormone and, as with GH, IGF-1 levels decline with age.

Other hormones whose production declines with age include the DHEA and melatonin. DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone, an endogenous prohormone secreted by the adrenal glands) has been reported to improve the well-being of older people in a variety of ways: improved memory, immune system, muscle mass, sexual appetite, and skin benefits. Protection against cancer has also been argued, but there really is no solid scientific evidence for this. Minor side effects such as acne have also been reported.

The melatonin is a hormone mostly involved in sleep and circadian rhythms, the latter hypothesised to be associated with ageing and life extension. It appears to have antioxidant functions in the brain and may have some beneficial effects in elderly patients, particularly in terms of sleep. Some proponents claim that it slows the ageing process and many age-related diseases, although this is far from proven. In humans there is no data to determine whether melatonin extends longevity, although it may have benefits in some patients. Although it can be used for some sleep disorders, it can also cause sleep disturbances such as nightmares. One study claims that melatonin levels do not decrease with age, except perhaps at night, although due to illness or medication older people may have low melatonin levels. Melatonin may also aggravate asthma.

Finally, for women, the oestrogen is a very popular anti-ageing therapy. This hormone is generally used in conjunction with others in hormone replacement therapy. There is a vast literature on the advantages and disadvantages of hormone replacement therapy. In the context of ageing, there is no evidence that oestrogen is an effective therapy. anti-ageing viable. For men, testosterone has also been touted as anti-ageing, but again, there is no evidence that it has anti-ageing benefits, although it may have some benefits such as increased muscle mass and sexual function.

  • Limit caffeine
    Too much caffeine can wreak havoc on the endocrine system, especially if other hormonal stressors are also involved, such as pregnancy, the presence of toxins, beneficial fat imbalance or stress.
  • Avoid toxins.
    Toxins found in pesticides, plastics, household chemicals, and even mattresses can contain chemicals that mimic hormones and cause the body not to produce real hormones.
  • Sleep well. If you don't get enough sleep, your hormonal system will not be balanced.
  • Take some basic supplements, such as magnesium, vitamin D, gelatine, maca or cod liver oil.
  • Moderate exercise, such as weight lifting.
  • Take coconut oil: Coconut oil is amazing for hormonal health. It provides the building blocks needed for hormone production, can aid weight loss, reduces inflammation, and even has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.
  • Balancing leptin
    Leptin is a major hormone, and if it is out of balance, the other hormones are not balanced. Binding leptin also helps increase fertility, makes weight loss easier, improves sleep and reduces inflammation. This hormone controls fat metabolism, regulating how much energy enters an organism. It monitors and sustains energy balance in the body by regulating appetite.
