Causes of ageing and solutions

From the age of 50 onwards, we must take even greater care of our health, as this is a time when many hormonal changes occur in both men and women. But while in women the change is abrupt, because the disappearance of oestrogens takes place over a period of one year, in men the change is more gentle and takes place over a period of ten years.

In women, oestrogen is generated in the ovaries, nourishing the bones, arteries, good cholesterol and skin quality. After the menopause, oestrogen is no longer generated in the ovaries and we start to age, which is why it is necessary to have check-ups to monitor cholesterol, sugar and other ageing factors. During the menopause, we tend to accumulate fat - about 5 kg - which is difficult to counteract afterwards.

Saber vivir answered the four basic questions that everyone asks when talking about ageing:

  • why do I put on weight as I get older?
  • why does cholesterol rise?
  • why is calcium lost?
  • what check-ups should I have? 

Some of the solutions given were:

  • take foods rich in omega 3 on a daily basis
  • getting checked from the age of 50 onwards
  • fill our pantry with foods such as: aubergines, wheat capsules and melatonin.
  • physical exercise. At this point, exercises such as rowing were recommended, to strengthen the back, doing a triceps exercise with which we fight against the flaccidity of our arms, shoulder and upper back; and squats to have a good muscle tone between the legs. In addition, of course, the important thing is to move, even in our own home, dancing, for example, and doing an aerobic exercise.

The television programme featured the intervention of Dr. Santiago Palacios, Gynaecologist, Medical Director of the Palacios Institute.
