Reading, the enemy of ageing

Reading a book

Taking care of the body-mind involves healthy habits and one of them is reading.

At Biosalud, we defend all those habits that are good for our health. And small routines such as reading favour the delay of dementias and the anti-ageing. It has been proven that reading is very good for the mind. And what influences the brain, influences our health, now and in the future.

Here are some of the health benefits of reading:

Health benefits of reading

  • More orderly thinkingCan you imagine reading "The Name of the Rose" or "The Da Vinci Code", for example, without concentrating hard enough? This concentration makes us exercise our neurons and forces us to put ideas in order, to be very clear about concepts and to exercise our memory.
  • We respond more quickly: What one usually does when reading a book or a novel is to imagine, with all that that entails in terms of putting into operation our brainwhich be more active and respond more quickly to external impulses or sensations. We tend to imagine the characters, what they will be like, the scenery, the buildings, the thoughts, sometimes we associate it with films we have seen, we compare it, etc.
  • Weapon against stressAny type of reading can be recommended, but to fight against the stress we accumulate every day, the best thing to do is to read fiction. Putting yourself in the role of Indiana Jones, to name one character, will make you focus so much that you will forget you have to go to sleep. And by the time you go to bed, you will be tired and sleep soundly, which helps to improve your sleep patterns, if you read daily.
  • Increased cognitive reserve: Reading activitiesand also writing, prevent the onset of dementia, as they increase the cognitive reserve in the individual.
