A healthy lifestyle increases the length of our telomeres.

Woman doing sport

Have a healthier lifestyles prolong our lives. This has always been known.

But now, a study published in The Lancet Oncology corroborates this. It has been shown that positive changes in our lifestyle, such as doing sport, not smoking, eating well, have an impact on the length of our telomeres. Telomeres are the ends of chromosomes. They are highly repetitive, non-coding regions of DNA whose main function is the structural stability of chromosomes in eukaryotic cells, cell division and the lifespan of cell lines. They are also involved in major diseases such as cancer.

Telomere length indicates biological age. The shorter the telomeres, the greater the likelihood of age-related death and disease.

The study, carried out at the University of California, San Francisco, compared two groups of men, one of whom changed their lifestyle to a healthier one, doing moderate exercise, eating a vegetarian diet, managing stress through meditation and yoga, and strengthening social relationships. And the result was that the telomere length of these men increased by almost 10%, while in the other group it decreased by 3%.

This pilot study can be used to show that, through large-scale controlled trials, lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of disease and premature death.

Anti-ageing medicine

Before this was put into practice, at Biosalud anti-ageing medicine has been one of our specialities for 30 years. Apart from insisting on healthy lifestyle habits, such as not smoking, we try to measure the patient's biological age in order to compare it with their chronological age. In this way, we discover whether they are physiologically ageing or, on the contrary, suffering from pathological ageing. After the specific tests, the personalised and therefore most effective anti-ageing treatment is applied.

Discover our anti-ageing medicine we may be able to help you increase the length of your telomeres, and therefore your lifespan.
