Research recommends screening for celiac disease in adolescents with irritable bowel syndrome
New research from Italy reveals that coeliac disease (CD) is 4 times more common in children with the disease than in those with the disease. irritable bowel syndrome (SCI) than in the general population, and its chances of developing coeliac disease would not be exceeded in children with abdominal pain not associated with irritable bowel syndrome.
The repeated abdominal pain is a common complaint in adolescents and is the reason for more than 50% of paediatric gastroenterology and general paediatric consultations (2-4%).
Other research on groups of adults with irritable bowel syndrome shows a significant increase in the prevalence of coeliac disease, but until now the true extent of coeliac disease in the paediatric population was unknown. The team led by Dr Ruggiero Francavilla, from the "Giovanni XXIII" Hospital in Bari, looked at the prevalence of coeliac disease in a group of children and adolescents with diseases associated with abdominal pain who had been referred by their primary care physician to a tertiary care centre for diagnosis and treatment.
