Medical centres Autoimmune hepatitis Leon

We are a European reference centre for the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune diseases.

What is Autoimmune Hepatitis?

Autoimmune hepatitis is a a disease that occurs when the patient's own immune system attacks the liver. causing inflammation and cell death in the tissue. It is a chronic, progressive disease with periods of varying degrees of activity and is one of the most persistent autoimmune diseases.

The course of the disease is serious as it is chronic with more or less severe flare-ups which, if sustained, lead to fibrosis of the liver and, as a consequence, cirrhosis and liver failure.

Causes of Autoimmune Hepatitis

The genetic and environmental factorsas in other autoimmune diseasescombine to give rise to the disease. However, this alone does not explain why the immune system is altered by attacking the body itself, in this case the liver.

Although the cause is not known, there is a widely held hypothesis that an environmental factor triggers a event reaction modulated by cytotoxic T-lymphocytes targeting liver antigens. If there is a genetic burden on the part of the patient, a process of necroinflammation and liver fibrosis occurs.

Triggers can include infectious, toxic, pharmacological and even certain herbal products.

Symptoms of Autoimmune Hepatitis

The disease is detected because it emerges fever and jaundiceas well as symptoms of liver dysfunction such as yellow skin pigmentation, pain in the right and upper abdomen, nausea and vomiting, and abdominal swelling.

The symptoms of this disease are similar to those of other types of hepatitis. The inflammation it causes in the liver due to aggression of the patient's defence cells, causes fatigue due to inflammation, biochemical increase of transaminases, heavy digestions, digestive discomfort related to the ingestion of certain foods, especially fats, and significant exhaustion that prevents a normal life.

Treatment of Autoimmune Hepatitis

As specialists in biological medicine, we have several techniques at our disposal that allow us to regulate the organism and we often use the biomedicine immunogenetics and molecular hyperthermia.

Treatments at Biosalud aim to modify the internal environment and nutritional measures are very important. The immune system, such as vitamin C supply, deacidification and regulation of the immune system, will allow us to stop the process.

In addition, the liver is the organ with the greatest capacity for self-regeneration of its own.
