A study recently published on the website of Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, has found that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are more likely to become obese in adulthood. In particular, they have been found to have a higher body mass index.
The study, co-authored by Francisco Xavier Castellanos, professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at NYU Langone Medical Center's Child Study Center, screened 111 boys who were hyperactive as children. After checking them at ages 18, 25 and 41, 41% were found to be obese compared to only 22% of those who were not hyperactive as children.
This research also neglects the fact that social status can influence whether a person is overweight. Both those with higher social status and those with lower social status had the same level of obesity if they had had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Each person, one diet
At Biosalud we are fully aware that obesity can lead to diseases such as diabetes or heart disease in adulthood, and we are fully aware of the importance of nutrition and overweight. That is why we carry out a personalised plan for each patient taking into account their objectives and way of life.
The body mass index is used to calculate the ideal weight of each person. The importance given at Biosalud to the BMI is demonstrated by the inclusion on its website of a tool so that anyone who wishes to do so can calculate it according to their weight and height and thus find out how overweight they are. At Biosalud we make you lose weight while gaining health. This means that at the same time that we apply a diet so that the person loses kilos, we make the levels of cholesterol and other substances that may have been altered by overweight return to their normal values.
