Fibromyalgia, a disease that goes beyond pain

Fibromyalgia

International Fibromyalgia Day is celebrated on 12 May to raise awareness of the condition.

If you feel tired, if you have muscle pain, numbness or cramps in your legs; if you find it difficult to fall asleep or your sleep is not restful; if you have concentration, memory or even intestinal problems, you may suffer from fibromyalgia. It is a little known disease, but it is more common than it is thought, since, according to different studies, Between 2% and 4% of the Spanish population suffer from it, or nearly two million people, of which 85% are women.

In order to raise awareness of the disease among the global population and to highlight the difficulties faced by sufferers, 12 May each year is celebrated on World Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Day. The date was selected to commemorate the birth of Florence Nightingale, founder of the first modern nursing school and believed to have suffered from the disease.

Fibromyalgia is a biopsychosocial condition or syndrome, which has many and varied symptoms and signs, but which combines three factors: moderate to severe pain in muscles and joints, along with sleep disturbances and profound fatigue. Although it is not a life-threatening condition, it can be very limiting. Moreover, the condition is often misdiagnosed or unrecognised and is complicated by mood and anxiety disorders.

The causes are still unknown

As for the causes of the disease, they are still unknown. It has often been attributed to psychological causes. However, some recent studies indicate that fibromyalgia may be caused by a nervous disorder.

This is evidenced by Marco Loggia, Harvard Medical SchoolThe study was published in the Journal of Fibromyalgia, when it states that the intense pain sensations caused by fibromyalgia may be due to a disturbance in the brain's reward system. Fibromyalgia patients have weaker nerve impulses to pain, which would also explain why the effect of painkillers and opioids on them is smaller.

According to another recent discovery, the result of research carried out by Nurcan Uceyler and his colleagues at the University of Würzburg, the number of small nerve fibres in fibromyalgia patients is lower, although it is not proven that this is due to the disease or is simply a symptom of another process. There are also studies that indicate that the disease may be due to an inflammatory process, as genetic variants linked to fibromyalgia have been found to have a significant effect on the number of small nerve fibres. cytokines inflammatory diseases.

Biological medicine, on the other hand, is concerned with looking for the cause or activating factors of the disease and making a diagnosis based on the patient's symptoms. For this type of medicine, fibromyalgia is always accompanied by viral or bacterial infections, such as Lyme, or heavy metal poisoning, acid pH, oxidative stress...

The 80% of fibromyalgia is a Lyme disease.

At Biosalud, we have been treating fibromyalgia for a long time. The first thing we do is to study the causes. And within these, the most frequent and underlying 80% of the cases is an Lyme disease. It is not fibromyalgia as such, but is the manifestation of an ailment caused by the bite of a mosquito or tick, which infects a person with the bacterium borrelia burgdorferi.

The Lyme disease is a great imitator of other diseases and thehe symptoms it produces are very similar to those of fibromyalgia. (extreme tiredness, rheumatic and neurological symptoms, among others). This similarity between the two means that they are often confused. Therefore, when we treat a patient with these symptoms, we analyse whether it is Lyme disease. If so, symptomatic treatment will not solve the problem. Moreover, long-term antibiotic treatment can cause serious side effects and do nothing to relieve the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

In order to rule out Lyme disease, at Biosalud we have the test of the LymeLymecheck. Immunocheck, lymphocyte and protein profile, Canditest and/or Koprocheck will also be needed to study the intestine, measurement of cellular oxidation (FORT) and antioxidant capacity (FORD), urinary pH, urine and blood tests. heavy metals (Heavymetalscheck), mineral composition, biocatalysts, and even a bioenergetic study (RAH Analysis or even Biocheck Scanner).

Once we have established the diagnosis and ruled out other illnesses, we will apply a personalised treatment that corrects the deviations from the biological point of view that the person has. Everything that is malfunctioning will be regulated and the causes of the fibromyalgia will be eliminated. The result is much more effective and will allow us to cure the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
